Coatlicue, whose name means "serpent skirt", is a Mexica (Aztec) goddess of fertility. She is also the mother of the gods, patroness of life and death, and a guide of rebirth. Coatlicue is traditionally depicted as a woman wearing a skirt of writhing snakes and her face formed by two facing serpents that appeared after she was decapitated.

The similarity of the shape of her face to the shape of the organs that give life inspired me to create this design. It represents all aspects of Coatlicue as a force of life and death.
