It wasn’t until the late 1990s that it was acknowledged colonial science that the original bison range included northern Mexico. Reintroduction efforts are ongoing in Mexico. Most recently bison returned to the plains of Coahuila, Mexico in 2025, after an absence there of about 160 years. Most of the names for bison by the peoples of the "border region" are part of extinct or endangered languages.
